Is dark chocolate vegan?

Depends

Quick answer: It depends. Dark chocolate is often made only from cocoa, sugar and an emulsifier, which is vegan, but some bars contain milk fat or milk powder and many carry “may contain milk” warnings.

Also called: plain chocolate, bittersweet chocolate, semisweet chocolate, cacao

The details

EU rules define chocolate by its cocoa content and do not require milk in dark chocolate, so many dark chocolates contain only cocoa mass, cocoa butter, sugar, lecithin and vanilla. Others add butterfat, milk powder or whey.

Cross-contact is common because dark and milk chocolate are often made on the same equipment. The US FDA found milk at potentially hazardous levels in some dark chocolates labelled “dairy-free”, and advises people with milk allergy to treat “may contain milk” statements as a warning. For vegans, a “may contain” warning concerns traces rather than ingredients; whether to accept it is a personal choice, but people with allergies must avoid it.
