itsvegan is the world’s vegan resource: one free place to find vegan restaurants, cafés, hotels, shops, brands and professionals, to learn about veganism, to cook, and to meet people who care about animals as much as you do.

Our mission

Going vegan — and staying vegan — should be easy wherever you are. A kind meal in an unfamiliar city, a nutritionist who understands a plant-based diet, a sanctuary to visit with your kids, a straight answer about vitamin B12: all of it should be one search away. That’s what we’re building.

We believe the best guide to vegan life is written by vegans themselves. Every listing, review, photo, recipe and article on itsvegan comes from people in the community, and everything is free to use. No paywalls, no “premium” access to information, no selling your data.

What you’ll find here

  • The directory — restaurants, cafés and bakeries, hotels and retreats, stores, beauty and wellness, brands, chefs, coaches, nutritionists, doctors, trainers, sanctuaries, organizations, local groups and events, each marked as 100% vegan, vegan options or vegan-friendly.
  • The vegan map — every place with an address on one worldwide map, plus city and country guides.
  • Reviews — honest experiences from members, with photos, owner replies and helpful votes.
  • Veganpedia — the free vegan encyclopedia on nutrition, health, ethics, environment, food and culture, editable by anyone and licensed CC BY-SA 4.0.
  • Recipes — tested plant-based recipes from members, with ingredient checklists and a servings scaler.
  • Community — forums, a social feed, private messages and profiles to connect with vegans around the world.
  • Bookings — request sessions with vegan chefs, coaches, nutritionists and other pros directly from their profile.

Built by the community

itsvegan works like a good neighbourhood noticeboard crossed with an encyclopedia. Members add places they love and update the ones that change; business owners claim their listings to keep details current; writers improve Veganpedia articles one edit at a time. Our small team builds the platform, moderates and keeps it fast, safe and free.

Where our data comes from

Directory data comes from two sources: members and business owners who add and update listings on itsvegan, and OpenStreetMap, the free, editable map of the world. Places tagged as vegan on OpenStreetMap are imported to give every city a head start, then enriched by our community with reviews, photos and details.

OpenStreetMap data is © OpenStreetMap contributors and available under the Open Database License (ODbL). Map tiles are provided by OpenStreetMap. If you spot a mistake in an imported place, you can fix it here — and we encourage you to fix it on OpenStreetMap too, so every map gets better.

How we stay independent

Listings are free and always will be. We never sell rankings: the order of results depends on relevance, ratings and how complete a listing is, not on payment. Reviews can’t be bought, edited or removed by businesses — owners can reply publicly, and anyone can report a review that breaks our guidelines. If we ever introduce optional paid features for businesses, they will be clearly labelled and will never affect reviews.

Editorial standards

These are the rules we follow so that what you read on itsvegan — and what search engines and AI assistants quote from us — is accurate and fair.

How listings are sourced

  • OpenStreetMap imports. Places tagged diet:vegan=only, yes or limited on OpenStreetMap are imported with their name, address, coordinates, opening hours and contact details, and keep a link back to the original OSM object.
  • Community additions. Members add and edit places; edits are checked by automated rules and moderators, and members can report closed or wrong listings.
  • Owner claims. Businesses can claim their listing after verification (for example an email on their own domain). Verified listings show a check mark; owners can update details but cannot edit or remove reviews.
  • Vegan level. Every place is labelled 100% vegan, vegan options or vegan-friendly. Summaries and FAQs on listing and city pages are generated only from this stored data — we never invent menus, prices or ratings.

How reviews are moderated

Reviews must describe a real, first-hand experience. Fake, incentivised, off-topic or abusive reviews are removed under our community guidelines; a business asking us to remove a genuine negative review is never a reason to remove it. Ratings shown in search results are the average of published member reviews only.

How Veganpedia is written

Veganpedia articles are written collaboratively, in a neutral tone, and should cite reliable sources — peer-reviewed research, position papers from dietetic and medical associations, official statistics and reputable journalism. Every article shows when it was last updated, its full revision history and a list of the sources it cites. Health and nutrition articles carry a notice that they are not medical advice. Text is licensed CC BY-SA 4.0.
