Is it vegan? Additives & E-numbers E471
Is E471 vegan?
Quick answer: It depends. E471 emulsifiers are made from glycerol and fatty acids that can come from plant oils or animal fats; most are now plant-based, but labels rarely say.
Also called: E471, mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids, monoglycerides, diglycerides, emulsifier
The details
Mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids are emulsifiers that help oil and water mix and keep bread soft. EFSA’s 2017 re-evaluation describes them as made from glycerol and fatty acids, which may be of vegetable or animal origin.
The Vegetarian Resource Group lists them as “may be non-vegetarian” because the commercial source can be cow- or pig-derived fat or vegetable oil, although some large manufacturers report using soybean oil. A vegan label, or confirmation from the manufacturer, is the only way to be sure.
