Is pectin vegan?

Vegan

Quick answer: Yes. Pectin (E440) is a gelling agent extracted from fruit, mainly citrus peel and apple pomace, and is vegan.

Also called: E440, E440i, E440ii, amidated pectin, fruit pectin

Why it’s vegan

Pectin is a natural fibre found in plant cell walls. Commercial pectin is extracted mainly from citrus peel and apple pomace and is used to set jams, jellies and fruit gummies. EFSA re-evaluated pectin (E440i) and amidated pectin (E440ii) in 2017.

Pectin-set gummies and jelly sweets are a common vegan alternative to gelatin-based ones.
