Is whey vegan?

Not vegan

Quick answer: No. Whey is the liquid left after milk is curdled to make cheese, so it is a dairy product and not vegan.

Also called: whey powder, whey protein, whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate, milk serum

Why it isn’t vegan

Whey is a by-product of cheese and casein production. It is dried into whey powder or concentrated into whey protein and used widely in protein supplements, baked goods, crisps, chocolate and processed foods.

Whey must be labelled as a milk allergen in the EU and UK. Plant-based protein powders based on pea, soy, rice or hemp are vegan alternatives.
