Vegan Piña Colada
★★★★★★★★★★ No reviews yetPuerto Rico’s tropical classic of white rum, pineapple and sweet cream of coconut, blended or shaken until frosty. Naturally dairy-free, with an alcohol-free version for kids.
Method
- Put the rum, pineapple juice, cream of coconut, lime juice and ice in a blender.
- Blend until smooth and frosty, about 20 seconds.
- Pour into a chilled hurricane glass or tumbler.
- Garnish with a pineapple wedge and a cherry.
Tips, storage & swaps
Shaken version: shake all the ingredients hard with ice and strain over crushed ice.
Cream of coconut vs coconut cream: cream of coconut is sweetened and syrupy and gives the classic flavour. If you only have unsweetened coconut cream, use 45 ml and add 15–20 ml sugar syrup.
Alcohol-free (kid-friendly): leave out the rum and add 30 ml extra pineapple juice.
Cherries: bright red maraschino-style cherries are sometimes coloured with carmine (E120), which is not vegan. Check the label or use fresh pineapple only.
Bartender’s note on vegan spirits: most distilled spirits contain no animal products. Problems are more likely with cream liqueurs (dairy), honey liqueurs, some red bitters and aperitifs that were historically coloured with carmine (E120), and wines, beers and fortified wines fined with isinglass, gelatin, casein or egg white. Check labels and producers’ statements; see our guides to isinglass and wine fining on itsvegan.org/is-it-vegan.
Every recipe on itsvegan is 100% plant-based: no meat, fish, dairy, eggs, honey or gelatin. Always check packaged ingredients such as chocolate, bread and wine for hidden animal products.
